Keep the Kids Movin' - Kids' Bikes

Tips for Biking with Kids.

Biking with your kiddos is a great family activity to do together. We’ve got a few simple tips to help you successfully go on bike rides with your kids!

Ready to get riding? Here are the key things you’ll need to make biking with your kids a great experience:

1. Pack Hydration and Lots of Snacks

Biking requires a good amount of exertion. Each family member should have their own water bottle and/or hydration pack as well as extra snacks suach as easy grab and go energy bars to keep everyone fueled up and happy :)

2. Dress in Layers

Layers, layers, layers! It's a good idea for everyone to bundle up in layers so they are comfortable at the start of the ride, but can easily remove layers as they warm up from pedalling. A bike bag is a great addition to hold anything not being worn or used.

3. Wear a Helmet

Helmets are non-negotiable for kids and adults! Lead by example and keep your noggins safe!

4. Lights On

Day or night, you should have lights! Daytime lights are great for being seen. They’ll increase your family’s visibility making sure no one goes unnoticed by the cars passing by.

5. Be Prepared

You may also want to bring a bike lock if you plan to stop at a cafe or store while you’re out. Simple tools are also not a bad idea. Even a few spare tubes and an inflator on hand to take care of any surprise flats will go a long way. And don’t forget your bike bells! They provide added safety allowing you to alert other bikers of your presence and there are some fun ones that kids love sporting on their bikes.

6. Keep the Distances Manageable

Start out with fun shorter rides and go a little further each time to build up your family’s stamina.

7. Pick Fun Stops Along the Way

It’s a lot more fun to have a destination! Who doesn't love an ice cream stop or a picnic at the park. Make your outings more enjoyable with these kinds of stops along the way.

8. Capture the Moment

If you have your phone with you, take the time to capture moments of your adventures. Share them with us! We'd love to see how you and your family spend time on your bikes. Tag @velobikeskitrail to share your journey with us.

9. Most Importantly, Have Fun!

Your kids are more likely to get excited about the next adventure if they enjoyed the last one… and so are you!
